In this four channel animation, Softer than Concrete, clouds are seen engulfing the residential buildings of a public housing estate in extreme slow motion. In the Old Testament, God often appeared in the form of pillars of clouds. How would the presence of God be felt in a typical new town as Tseung Kwan O? With this work, I tried to create a juxtaposition between the spiritual and the banal. The movement is so slow that the images would appear static to a passerby at any moment. The slowness is an attempt to induce a sense of suspended time, to allow contemplation and critical inquiry into the notion of fastness and slowness within the context of contemporary animation and comic aesthetics. The work was commissioned by the Art Promotion Office for “This Slow. That Fast : Animamix Biennale 2013-14”.
